Tameside Countryside Ranger Service at Lymefield

Located at Broadbottom in the Etherow Valley, Lymefield Visitor Centre is the base for the Countryside Ranger Service in the south of the borough.

The Visitor Centre has displays about the local countryside, seasonal displays about various subjects like wildlife and local history and heritage. The Visitor Centre is also the base for education trips to the area, and a starting point for many of the countryside events.

There are public toilets at the visitor centre (including accessible facilities and baby changing) which are available during opening hours, parking facilities, and full aqccess for all. We sell a range of books and maps, as well as souvenirs and gifts, and the nearby garden centre cafe provides refreshments.

Close to the Visitor Centre is an educational area with woodland, wildflower meadows, a herb garden and a pond. For the adventurous there is also a maze to get lost in! Nearby is Broad Mills Heritage Site where the industrial heritage and wildlife are managed in harmony.

Further afield, footpaths lead along the Etherow valley to Great Wood LNR and Werneth Low Country Park beyond. To the south is the impressive sweep of Coombs Rocks and the Peak District National Park, and following the paths across the farmland to the north quickly brings you to the moorland in and around Stalybridge Country Park.

Lymefield Visitor Centre is easy to find, follow the brown tourist signs from the A57 at Mottram in Longdendale (just off the M67), or come by train, we are just a 5 minute walk from Broadbottom rail station on the Manchester to Glossop line.

Broad Mills

Once the site of a huge complex of cotton mills, the site of Broad Mills at Broadbottom, adjoining the Lymefield Visitor Centre, has been carefully reclaimed, and the remains of the mills, with their complex arrangement of mill races and sluices, restored for visitors to enjoy. Self-guided trails leaflets to this and other nearby features of interest are available from the Tameside's countryside ranger service.
